Support For You
Social support can be of great benefit!
We are social beings however when diagnosed with a chronic condition we may find we step back from our friends and family as they don't understand what we are going through.
People often lose connections when life changes, particularly through ill health but it is possible to make new connections and reap the benefits of a healthy social network. Loneliness is associated with a variety of health problems however emotional support can provide a protective factor in dealing with life's stresses. Having a strong social support can actually help you to cope with problems on your own too.
Social support groups can fill a gap in your life by connecting you with other people living with the same condition. These people understand how you feel and the lovely part of this is that in being supported you also support others as you share your experiences.
Our social Coffee Catch Ups for 2022 were a huge success and we thank our Ambassadors for helping provide social support when Committee members have been unavailable.

Genetics and Lymphoedema
Until recently the nature and cause of primary lymphoedema (lymphoedema acquired at birth) remained unknown. Now genetic mutations have been identified as being directly linked to most primary lymphoedema cases.
The first gene identified as causative for human lymphoedema was in 1998 and there is still intensive research in this area to date. Currently there at least 9 mutations known for inherited human lymphoedema.
The identification of the role of these genes has been crucial in understanding the genetic involvement in lymphatic dysfunction.

What type of exercise is best to help you move your lymph?
Research has shown that regular exercise is beneficial for managing lymphoedema so being active is encouraged.
Depending on your health and fitness level, different types of exercise may be appropriate at different times. Remember to exercise safely, ideally with the advice of your treating team: your doctor or nurse, lymphoedema therapist and/or fitness specialist.
Be aware that many fitness specialists or personal trainers may be unfamiliar with lymphoedema so you may need to educate them about the condition, what helps you and what you need to avoid.
Moving your muscles and breathing more deeply, stimulates your lymphatic system and helps your lymph flow.
